Gail
Shapiro was born in Chicago and lives and works there.
She is a graduate of Northwestern University and has studied at
the National College of Education and the Art Institute of Chicago.
She has pursued independent art studies throughout the Chicago area.
She has taught art in the Chicago Public Schools, Wright Junior
College and the College of Lake County. Illinois. She has also directed
art programs and taught art at several community organizations and
adult education programs. She periodically lectures on art and art
history.
These teaching and community activities run parallel to her pursuit
of painting in acrylic and pastel over a span of several years.
In recent years, she has devoted her efforts fulltime to painting
and drawing with just an occasional lecture.
Her art has been featured in shows and galleries in Chicago, Michigan,
Indiana and Maine.
Although based in Chicago, Gail travels throughout the United States,
Europe, the Middle East and Africa gaining inspiration, ideas and
material.
In recent years she traveled to Botswana, Kenya & South Africa.
Her drawings and sketches from this trip resulted in a series of
large acrylic paintings later shown at a solo show titled "Beneath
The Sahara" at the Purdue University North Central gallery
in Westville, IN.
